Tax Manager

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Tax Manager to join our tax team in Carlisle.

You will manage a varied portfolio of owner-managed businesses, family-run businesses and private individuals, delivering both tax compliance services and high-quality tax planning advice across Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax.

As a member of our senior management team, you will contribute to the delivery of our business plan while supporting the development of colleagues across the firm.

What you’ll be doing

  • Manage a portfolio of personal tax clients.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through excellent customer service.
  • Advise clients on tax compliance and tax planning matters.
  • Identify tax planning opportunities and provide practical commercial solutions.
  • Prepare and review approximately 750 tax returns annually, including:
    • Personal Tax Returns
    • Partnership Tax Returns
    • Capital Gains Tax Returns
  • Complete tax calculations and review clients’ overall tax positions.
  • Ensure all tax returns are completed accurately and submitted on time.
  • Manage HMRC enquiries and correspondence.
  • Provide advice on:
    • Business restructuring
    • Capital Gains Tax
    • Inheritance Tax planning
    • Share schemes
    • Property taxation
  • Support senior leadership on complex tax planning projects.
  • Help develop and support colleagues within the business.

Essential requirements

  • Strong working knowledge of UK corporate and personal taxation.
  • Experience managing a diverse client portfolio.
  • Experience delivering tax compliance and tax advisory services.
  • Ability to prepare and review tax returns accurately.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex tax matters clearly.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Professional, client-focused attitude.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable requirements

  • A minimum of seven years’ experience in a UK accountancy practice is preferred.
  • ACA, ACCA, ATT or CTA qualified, or equivalent practice experience.

The opportunity

As a Client Portfolio Manager, you’ll manage your own portfolio of clients while building trusted relationships and delivering a first-class service. You’ll work with business owners to understand their goals, interpret financial performance and provide advice that helps them plan for the future.

This role offers plenty of variety, combining statutory accounts, management reporting, client meetings and commercial advisory work in a collaborative and supportive environment.

What you’ll be doing

As Client Portfolio Manager, you will:

  • Manage a portfolio of owner-managed and family businesses, acting as their main point of contact on a daily basis and providing high-quality services.
  • Plan, prepare and review financial accounts within agreed deadlines and budgets.
  • Produce accurate monthly, quarterly and half-yearly management reports.
  • Present financial information in a clear, practical way that supports business decisions for clients.
  • Identify opportunities to improve tax efficiency and wider business performance.
  • Develop strong, lasting relationships through proactive communication and excellent client service.
  • Work alongside Managing Directors to enhance internal processes and maintain high standards.
  • Contribute to the continued growth of the practice through referrals, networking and identifying opportunities within your client portfolio.

Essential requirements

We’re looking for candidates with:

  • Previous experience in a client-facing position within an accountancy practice.
  • Experience managing a diverse portfolio of clients.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge gained in practice.
  • A commercial mindset with the ability to understand the challenges facing SMEs.
  • Experience using accounts preparation software.
  • Good working knowledge of cloud accounting softwares such as Xero, Sage and QuickBooks.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with a professional client-centric attitude.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise competing deadlines.
  • A proactive approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.
  • A full UK driving licence.

Desirable requirements

  • ACA or ACCA qualification, or equivalent experience within an accountancy practice.

About the role

As Payroll Services Manager, you’ll oversee payroll processing for clients across a wide range of sectors. You’ll manage payroll data, statutory deductions, pension submissions, HMRC returns and payroll reporting, while acting as a reliable point of contact for clients and external stakeholders.

This role would suit someone with strong technical payroll knowledge, excellent attention to detail and the confidence to manage multiple deadlines in a busy professional services environment.

What the role entails:

  • Managing end-to-end payroll processing for a diverse client base.
  • Processing payroll changes, including starters, leavers, tax codes, contract changes and earnings arrestments.
  • Collating and entering payroll information such as timesheets, expenses and pay adjustments.
  • Calculating statutory payments, including maternity, paternity and other deductions.
  • Processing salary sacrifice arrangements, including childcare-related schemes.
  • Applying annual pay increases, cost of living changes and incremental adjustments.
  • Carrying out regular payroll checks to maintain accurate and reliable records.
  • Arranging payments to employees, HMRC, pension providers and other relevant bodies.
  • Monthly and annual pension preparation and submissions.
  • Monthly and annual HMRC payroll returns preparation and submissions.
  • Responding (over the phone and in writing) to payroll queries from clients, employees, managers and external contacts.
  • Prepare quarterly payroll invoices for client billing.
  • Maintaining and updating payroll process notes and internal guidance.
  • Supporting payroll system updates, testing and improvements in collaboration with the IT team.
  • Keeping accurate audit records and providing payroll information for audit purposes.
  • Producing client reports, including gross-to-net and employee cost information.
  • Supporting the wider team with other reasonable payroll-related duties directed by the line manager.

Essential requirements

We’re looking for a Payroll Services Manager who has:

  • A recognised payroll qualification, accountancy qualification, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Recent hands-on experience managing a large computerised payroll.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, PAYE, National Insurance and pensions administration.
  • Excellent IT skills, including strong Word and advanced Excel capability.
  • Experience managing payroll data and databases.
  • Strong numeracy skills and confidence completing payroll calculations accurately.
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills.
  • High attention to detail and a methodical working style.
  • A positive, professional and service-focused approach.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Desirable requirements

  • Experience using Sage 50 accounting software.
